I recently read – but there was no evidence to back it up – that for every tonne of useful product produced in the UK, about 10 tonnes of resources (natural materials and energy) are consumed. If so, this seems to be a staggering imbalance. I also wondered who had decided on what constitutes "useful" – there are many products manufactured that I would not place in that category. That makes the imbalance even more alarming!
