Practical e-business leadership

The Rt. Hon. Patricia Hewitt, Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, launched the PeBL, (Practical e-Business Leadership) programme last year, and she stressed the importance of all UK businesses committing to the adoption of e-Business as a vital step to ensuring their future competitiveness.

Developed by the UK Council for Electronic Business, the PeBL initiative aims to be a major force in the drive to keep high-tech defence and aerospace companies in the forefront of world developments.

The key objective of PeBL is to provide a framework enabling organisations to develop business strategies that exploit the radical opportunities of e-Business. It has particular focus on helping organisations to work with customers and suppliers to identify and realise collaborative e-Business opportunities.

A large number of defence and aerospace companies see the adoption of full e-Business and extended enterprise across their supply chains as fundamental to future profitability and growth.

e-Business is re-modelling the productivity and globalisation of industry. Early adopters of PeBL are now electronically sharing information relating to design, build, manufacture and product support, internally and with customers and suppliers worldwide. Cost models and lead times are being transformed, while international competitiveness and business-winning capability have been radically improved. Engineering excellence is synonymous with cutting edge innovation and technology and the early adopters recognised that those concepts go hand in hand with business excellence.
