Alcan Inc. has opened its first South American composites production facility, located in Camacari, Bahia State, Brazil. This initiative is part of Alcan's strategy to develop this sector by leveraging its leading composite technology and expertise. The plant was acquired as a result of a joint venture agreement concluded in April 2002 between Alcan Aluminio do Brasil Ltda and the NJK Group of Brazil. Production has just started and capacity is expected to increase gradually to 100,000m2 per month. The main markets served will be in the Mercosur region, comprising Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina, Bolivia and Chile. Alcan Composites is a global leader in speciality composites, including Alucobond, an aluminium composite material primarily used as exterior cladding panels on commercial buildings. This strong, lightweight and rigid material is made with two sheets of 0.020in. aluminium bonded to a thermoplastic core. The finished material can be coated with a variety of state-of-the-art paint finishes.
