Leadership

Leadership

Leadership seems to be the new "rock n' roll". By that, I mean it seems to be the subject of every third new business book, and of many seminars. It seems as though management is "old hat"; we now all have to be leaders. Those leading on leadership often quote examples of exemplary leadership – some company that has been particularly innovative or successful. But there are many examples of companies doing both via luck, via good management and by a host of other methods. I'm not decrying leadership, I just want to "put it in its place" as one contributing factor, only occasionally all-important (unless, of course, one subscribes to the view that its good leadership that draws good management, that good leaders are lucky … but that's a longer piece than this one! And I remind you of the words of Baltazar Gracian (1601-1658) … "Good things, when short, are twice as good.")
