IBM's Almaden Research Center, recently celebrated its 15th anniversary and presented its latest research on nanotechnology – the process of manipulating atoms as discrete objects. This technology will allow manufacturers to place an atom of a particular element at a specific location to produce a desired electronic effect. This will allow chip makers like Intel to carve out electronic gates only 20 nanometers long, enabling switching rates of 1,500GHz – allowing packing densities 25 times greater than a current Pentium.
