Boots Opticians has acquired exclusive rights to use patented advanced lightstream technology (ALT) to make spectacle lenses in its stores. The lenses produced by this new technology are lighter and clearer than standard plastic lenses and are available in single vision, bi-focal and multi-focal designs covering the most popular prescriptions. The new lens will be marketed under the name "Boots Prismiq". The lens crafting technology will be incorporated into Boots Opticians' existing in-store laboratories, and will offer significant improvements in supply chain efficiency, along with a reduction in the stock-holding requirement in store. Producing lenses in-store will also offer a considerable service advantage to customers. Advanced lightstream technology works by filling a metal and glass mould with a liquid resin, which is then hardened in a stream of ultra-violet light to produce an ophthalmic lens. The combination of different moulds creates lenses of different powers. The initial range of powers will be +3.75 to –3.75 sphere.
