WAP a mess
The current hype over WAP (wireless access protocol) is just that – hype. Accessing data from the Internet (even when pre-formatted for a WAP phone) is painfully slow, and the size of the screen makes it impossible to read anything useful. I am not being a Luddite here – I know the future of the Internet is tied to the future of the mobile phone – but overselling current limited technologies doesn't help anyone (it only helps those selling the phones in the short-term, their oversold users may turn against them). If you want to see an effective portable Internet service, take a look at AvantGo on a Pocket PC. This gives real content – useful and readable. It hasn't been hyped; it's just built its service slowly and steadily. WAP – or some variation – may be the future, AvantGo is the present!
