Lightweight
For some time the aluminium industry has been trying to take over from steel as the primary metal for automobiles. The problems occur in the trade-off between weight and safety. Although aluminium offers a weight advantage, the goal is to come up with a design that is also as strong as steel. One of the latest tools now available to the design engineer is the Aluminium Design System. It accelerates the process of designing aluminium components by providing quick access to aluminium design information, and automating many design procedures. Features include allowable stress design specifications, building load and resistance factors, and material and section properties. The program was developed in conjunction with Desktop Engineering International (DEI) of Mahwah, New Jersey, USA. For more information, contact DEI: Tel. +1-800-888-8680; e-mail: sales@deiusa.com
