I have had a few dealings with civil (public) servants recently. What struck me about them - the dealings and the civil servants - was the difference that has taken place in the last decade or so. Such "servants" are now sharp, dynamic people with high levels of communication skills - and, the real shocker, an awareness of the wider world and a desire to be helpful. Perhaps I have just been lucky - "my" civil servants were in the Department of Trade and Industry, after all, but it was refreshing to see their attitude.
