Of material interest
Of material interest
A joint UK-Korea aerospace materials research centre at Rolls-Royce plc, in Derby, has been extended until 2006. The original agreement paving the way for the centre was signed in October 1994, as part of Korea's programme of becoming one of the world's top ten aerospace nations. Since the centre opened in 1996, it has been working on materials behaviour for a number of alloys used to make aero engine blades, vanes and discs. The centre, which uses facilities at Cambridge and Birmingham Universities, is also working on predicting the life of aero engine discs. The second phase of its work will cover more research and development programmes, including materials, manufacturing and design-related research. Both Rolls-Royce and KIMM (the Korea Institute of Machinery and Metals) will continue to work together to enable Korean industrial partners to participate in the second phase.
