On your marks

The launch by leading business information supplier, the RM Group, of its online Trade Mark Search facility provides users with instant and low-cost access to UK and Community Trade Marks - without incurring expensive legal costs and reducing the time and expense of developing a mark which already exists. At a starting price of only £3.50 per name, RM's Trade Mark Search can produce effective answers in just five minutes compared with a traditional search that could take up to five days! Available via the RM Web-based aRMadillo service (http://www.rmonline.com), Trade Mark Search can be conducted to include images, logos, devices or shapes in black and white or colour as well as word and/or slogans. aRMadillo offers search options including identical mark search, full present phonetic search and logo device search, embracing, for example:

  • UK and Community Trade Mark Register search - an integrated database combining the UK and Community Trade Mark Register. A single search can retrieve all available records.

  • Ownership search - aRMadillo users can search any company name to reveal full details of all trade marks owned by that company.

  • Phonetic matching - for similarities in the sound (not just the spelling) of words and phrases. This is a must before adopting a new trade mark or company name.

  • Identification of a trade mark by name or number.

  • The ability to search for a phrase within a specification of goods or services.

You can tailor the search and limit it to registered and/or pending and/or lapsed or abandoned marking, as well as by claim of goods or services. Importantly, under the Madrid Protocol (1996), individuals and companies in the UK can now file trade marks in numerous countries, including China, Germany, Korea, Poland, the Russian Federation, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Searches and associated registration services of all countries covered by the Madrid Protocol can be performed by RM.
