Designer cheek

I was sat next to a young girl on a plane the other day and I couldn't help noticing that every item of clothing she wore (or at least all those I could see), including her handbag, had a designer's name on them. These were basically high street items and she must have paid quite a premium over "generic" item for the privilege of carrying names like "Red or Dead". The fashion industry has done a remarkable job of convincing the young that true happiness can only be achieved when everyone else can recognise your clothing. The industry has managed to achieve high "value added" at very little cost and I suppose must be applauded but it does show that there are some strange value judgements at work when such things become important.
