To boost the power and operating efficiency of its ship-to-shore secure telephones, the US Navy has purchased approximately 100 STU-III SVS modules from Timeplex. The system was designed to operate efficiently in tactical environments which are often located in remote areas. It utilises limited communications over multiple satellite hops or through degraded networks and ensures that secure calls can be made when needed. The SVS supports both types of secure telephone systems currently being used by the Navy: the analogue STU-III telephone units, and the newer Secure Terminal Equipment which operates over digital circuits. Additionally the SVS recovers the 9.6 or 4.8kbps encrypted digital signal from the originating call and this is combined with four or more encrypted voice signals for transport over a single voice channel.
