The European Community, now more widely referred to as the European Union, continues to develop. In the increasingly global economy, it is important that citizens of the EU understand the broader political environment which it represents. Although the EU often receives a "bad press", there are many larger economic and social issues which can no longer be addressed on a purely national basis - there is a need to co-ordinate activity over a wider area. This is true of issues which transcend national boundaries such as unemployment, pollution, transport, etc.

This revised, updated and largely rewritten sixth edition of a well-established book is intended to be a guide to the EU within the context of what is relevant to EU business, setting out in simple language a wealth of information about the EU including:

  • its origins;

  • aims and achievements;

  • decision making;

  • current and future developments.

It includes details of many of the programmes and initiatives started to help various sectors where EU funds may be available: from tourism to transport, from small firms to science and technology programmes.
