Hark to Rover

The recently-awarded BT SME Award for Innovation in e-business went to an independent, Suffolk-based garage boss, Duncan Mansfield. He said: "We could only be cost-competitive in the UK by selling lower-quality parts, which was against our business strategy, but knew that we could exploit the expense and slowness faced by Land Rover customers overseas. Now our Website is taking orders ranging up to thousands of pounds from individuals and businesses from home and abroad. We keep our costs low by using the garage's existing database of 4,000 parts". The Website (www.mansfield-motors.com) promotes a virtual community of Land Rover enthusiasts, with information about Land Rovers and Mansfield Motors, discussion board, pictures, advice column and classified ads. In just five months, 700 Land Rover owners have registered on the database. Simon Champion, Head of Electronic Commerce at BT, the premier sponsors, said:

Electronic business knows no boundaries, either geographically or politically. As a global business itself, BT knows the problems which companies can encounter, as their business reach and trading partners stretch around the globe. BT is delighted that so many British, Continental and North American companies entered for the awards.
