This is the latest report in the MACE series and highlights the problems of maintaining data security in networked environments that have moved from relatively closed technologies such as private leased‐lines to open networks with common protocols. Improving access and cross‐trafficking also increases the risks of data loss. There is now a need for all networked organisations to have a comprehensive network security policy and strategy. This report traces the history of network security, describes its changing nature and forecasts future security challenges ‐ along the way offering as much up‐to‐date information as you could need to establish your own areas of risk and possible means of addressing those risks. All the jargon, such as encryption, firewalls, LAN, WAN, IP, etc. are explained and dealt with and, because it is comprehensive, there is no worry about simply moving the problem on to another, equally risky area ‐ all areas are covered from the desktop through the servers to the infrastructure and out on to the Internet.
