This book analyses successful companies and aims to identify what makes them so ‐ and what lessons should be learned by those wishing to emulate such success. The lessons are drawn from undeniably successful organisations ‐ such as Cadbury Schweppes, Marks & Spencer, Matsushita, Toyota, Motorola and Shell. An additional, external perspective is obtained by talking to General Sir Peter de la Billiere and General Norman Schwarzkopf, both highly influential military leaders of the last decade. The book explains the importance of the direct line between a clear mission and understanding of what customers want, and performance measures that ensure that activities within the organisation are delivering that mission and those requirements. Each chapter examines a key aspect of performance and step‐by‐step shows how to turn theory into practice, using simple devices such as self‐assessment questionnaires and checklists. These are designed to be used by managers in their own organisations, to achieve practical change based on these proven records of success.
