IPC announces updated releases of GenCAM document and CD
Keywords IPC, Data transmission, CAD/CAM
IPC has released an updated version of its GenCAM® data transfer solution. GenCAM version 1.5 is now available to those companies looking to improve data transfer among printed board manufacturers, assemblers and designers.
"The companies that were using the original version of GenCAM asked IPC to restructure the sections in the software," says IPC director of technology transfer Dieter Bergman. "By doing this we improved the computer's ability to quickly process data between and within the CAD/CAM tools."
While working on resetting the structure of the software's tools, IPC also cleaned up the text in the document, which mainly encompassed explanatory details to help the user understand keywords and parameters. The committee has now completed its work.
Michael McClay and Michael McCaleb from NIST also worked on the GenCAM 1.5 version, verifying the syntax and semantics and removing inconsistencies in IPC-2511A standard. This data model of GenCAM has been frozen until December 2001 to permit tool providers the time to develop the translators to allow GenCAM in and out of their software systems.
IPC has also included the GenCAM 1.5 standard on its GenCAM CD. The CD-ROM now includes all the new revision of the data transfer standards (IPC-2511A through IPC-2518A) and a copy of the Express G diagrams developed by McCaleb, which verified the linkages between objects and elements of the GenCAM structure.
The CD also includes new presentations on GenCAM and the relationships with NEMI's Plug & Play Project and Virtual Factory Information Interchange Program (VFIIP).
