< "In appreciation of our exhibitors and attendees, we are deeply honored to present one of the greatest living American heroes at NEPCON West 2000", said Lorenz Hassenstein, industry vice president, NEPCON. "Since his history-making moonwalk, Dr Aldrin continues to set an inspirational example through his lifelong, impassioned commitment to venturing outward in space.
Dr Aldrin's unprecedented heroic endeavor, 20 July 1969, was witnessed by the largest worldwide audience in the history of television. Upon returning from the moon, he embarked on an international goodwill tour and was presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor among over 50 other distinguished awards and medals from the USA and numerous other countries.
Now concentrating on the future of the space program, Dr Aldrin has lent his support to the John Glenn shuttle mission as a commentator on CNN and MSNBC and is currently setting his sights on the imminent reality of space tourism.
Dr Aldrin is also the author of two nonfiction books, Men from Earth and Return to Earth, and the co-author of a science fiction novel, Encounter with Tiber. His fourth book, Mars Four, was scheduled to debut in January 2000.
