Philips Electronic Manufacturing Technology (EMT) and Yamaha Motor Co. Ltd have announced the signing of a contract that extends their long-term relationship in marketing SMD mounters for another six years, with an automatic six-year renewal option (Plate 2).

The Philips-Yamaha partnership started in 1987 when the companies introduced their first joint product at Productronica, in Germany. "Our cooperative relationship has been very beneficial for both companies", says Cor Scholten, managing director of Philips EMT. "Most importantly, it has allowed us to supply a full range of SMT solutions to meet our customers' production requirements."

By working closely together over the past 12 years, the companies have gained a prominent position in the global board-assembly marketplace. "The relationship between Philips and Yamaha is by far the longest of its kind in the industry - and together we have probably sold the highest number of machines in the class in the industry", says Tsuneji Togami, managing director of Yamaha IM.

Adds Scholten, "Both of our companies are very proud of what we have achieved together and we feel that by extending our relationship in this way we are positioning ourselves to take full advantage of the growth opportunities in the board-assembly industry".
