It is with tremendous sadness that we learned of the sudden death of Declan Clear who passed away on 17 December after a sudden illness. We have lost both a valued friend and colleague who worked extremely hard for the SMART Group since it was set up in Ireland some 12 years ago.

Declan was chairman of the SMART Group-Ireland from 1997 to 1999, and I had the honour and privilege to take over from him as chairman last July. It is a strange feeling that only one week before Declan suffered the illness he was so very much full of life at our Christmas party in Cork with his wife Pat. Declan was also recently presented with the 1999 SMART Fellow Award for his tremendous dedication, hard work and support to the SMART Group over the years.

Declan was also very successful in business and was MD of Schloetter in Co. Kildare, a very good business which he had developed over the years.

My impression of Declan over the years was of an individual that you could trust. He was very dependable, loyal and was a tremendously astute businessman. A man of his word.

All we can do now is pray that Declan has left us for something much better, something and somewhere that one day we will all enjoy.

We sincerely hope that Declan's wife Pat and family will be comforted by the fact that his loss will be felt by the thousands of people within the industry who had the privilege to work with and know him.
