CRC – A Guide for Landlords and Tenants

Article Type: Recent publications From: Structural Survey, Volume 29, Issue 1

RICS as a member of the Green Property Alliance has contributed to a revised guide for landlords and tenants on the implications of the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme. The carbon footprint of buildings is the source of just under 50 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions in the UK (according to the Department for Communities and Local Government (CLG)). This guide is intended to assist owners and occupiers of commercial property to plan to implement the CRC, a new legally binding emissions trading scheme that applies to large businesses and public sector organisations with effect from April 2010. All owners and occupiers of property should be aware that, even if they are not affected when the scheme is launched, the CRC is likely to affect the way properties are bought and sold. Furthermore, the scheme is organised in phases of seven years at a time, which may mean that some organisations that are not affected in the first phase will fall within the scope of the scheme in future phases. This is the second edition of the guide which is available as a download from the RICS web site.
