CDM 2007: A Guide for Clients and Their Advisors

The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007 came into effect in April 2007. CDM 2007 now applies to all construction projects regardless of their size or duration. The Regulations change the role and duties of several key duty holders, including clients, who are now required to take a more active role in discharging their duties from the initial concept stage of a project. CDM 2007 introduces the role of CDM co-ordinator for notifiable projects. The CDM-C is expected to provide advice and assistance to clients in ensuring that suitable arrangements are in place for managing health and safety on construction projects. Whether advising clients on budgets, tenders or whole life cycle costing, preparing specifications and drawings, or acting as project managers or employer’s agent, construction professionals will need to know how the new CDM Regulations affect them and their clients. This book written by Tony Baker is intended for clients, their advisors and those undertaking the role of CDM co-ordinator. It provides practical advice and guidance on the many changes introduced by the new Regulations. It will also prove invaluable to students and those seeking to establish their competence to deal with the new Regulations. Published by RICS Books at £45.00.

Sustainability Through Planning

Published by IHS BRE Publishing and written by J. Prior and C. Williams this report shows how the BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM), EcoHomes and the Code for Sustainable Homes are being used by local authorities to deliver their sustainable development objectives through the planning system. It includes results of a survey of over 200 local authorities across England, and the outputs from a workshop involving 50 local authority planners and others involved in strategic development. Case studies from eight local authorities illustrate the wide range of approaches being taken to overcome the barriers to sustainable development. There are clearly many concerns within local authorities trying to deliver sustainable development, and the report identifies a need for more clarity in policy relating to sustainability and the strengthening of some requirements, particularly building regulations. It is priced at £35.00 and can be ordered from BRE.
