Flood risk advice take-up

Keywords: Floods, Local government

Local planning authorities are increasingly heeding priorities for sustainable development by avoiding building in areas at risk of flooding, according to new figures released by the Environment Agency and Local Government Association. The annual monitoring report on “Development and flood risk” shows the performance of all local planning authorities in England between March 2005 and April 2006 on developments where the Environment Agency has provided flood risk advice. The latest figures show that in cases where the Environment Agency objected on flood risk grounds and where local authorities had advised of the final outcome, 95 per cent were in line with Environment Agency advice – up from 92 per cent in 2004/2005.
