House Inspector

This is a concise and comprehensive guide to building defects and building inspection. Flood Risk Assessment

Wriiten by Gareth Evans, the subject of this work is on how to assess flood risk for individual properties and sites. After 2000 there is a greater perception of the risk due to recent weather conditions faced in the UK. Using case studies, including Boscastle 2004, issues such as actual risk, global warming, insurance costs, flood plains, sea defences and many more are discussed. This work will be a valuable reference for surveyors, valuers, planners, architects and students. The book is priced at £20 and published by EG books.

Case in Point – Dilapidations

When handling a dilapidations claim you need to be up to date with the latest case law. This book takes an excellent approach, ordering case summaries by points of surveying practice, to assist you in understanding the law of dilapidations. Focusing on both commercial and residential cases, this practical and concise guide will be invaluable in aiding the resolution of landlord and tenant dilapidation claims. The author is Jason Hunter, the publisher RICS Books and the price £24.95.

Compulsory Purchase and Compensation

This is the eighth edition of the established book written by Barry Denyer Green and widely used by practitioners and students of estate management, surveying, valuation, planning and law. It has been extensively revised to reflect the relevant provisions of the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004 and other recent legal developments. The author is a practising barrister and a chartered surveyor. The book is published in paperback by EG Books at £37.00.

Home Information Packs: A Practical Guide

This new guide – aimed at both legal and property practitioners – sets out Part 5 of the Housing Act 2004 in full, interspersing it with detailed annotation, which expertly explains and analyses the legislation and its objectives in introducing Home Information Packs. Supported by diagrams, the contents of the Home Information Packs are discussed, outlining a typical pack, what’s required, and what documents are needed to support the requirements. A specimen copy of the Home Condition Report, a key component of the packs, is reproduced in full. Inspections and Reports on Dwellings: Inspecting

This book written by Gordon and Melville describes the work of inspecting all visible and accessible parts of dwellings as required by the Conditions of Engagement for all five types of report. Ascertaining construction and assessing condition are extensively covered, the former vital for supplying the data to produce the Energy Performance Report. This is the second book in a series of four covering all aspects of the work of inspecting and reporting on dwellings in the UK for the five types of report commonly required, including the HCR which will be compulsory from January 2007 in England and Wales. Priced at £40.00 and published in paperback by EG Books.

Surveying for Construction

By William Irvine and Finlay MacLennan of Glasgow Metropolitan College, this is an essential textbook for students of engineering new to surveying that will also appeal to students of building and environmental studies and archaeology. This best selling text offers a strong grounding in land and construction surveying and the authors clearly and comprehensively guide the reader through the principles, methods and equipment used in modern-day surveying. Taking into account recent advances in the field, the material has been fully updated and revised throughout including up-to-date coverage of levelling, total stations, detail surveys, and EDM. A new chapter on GPS technology has been added. In keeping with the practical nature of the book, there are chapters on setting out construction works and surveying existing buildings, which guide the reader step-by-step through the fundamental procedures. Building Regulations Study Paper

This study paper by Neil Badley allows all those in the built environment to keep up with the ever-evolving area of Building Regulations. It looks at the major changes to Parts L (Energy Conservation) and F (Ventilation) which came into force on 6 April 2006. It also comments on the likely direction of Part B (Fire Precautions), through reference to the draft documents currently with the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister for consultation. It also covers the future direction of the remaining regulations. Satisfies up to four hours CPD, produced by the College of Estate Management and priced at £37.00 plus VAT.

Building Construction Handbook

Building Construction Handbook by Chudley and Greeno summarises all elements of building construction practice, techniques and procedures, in line with the most recent amendments to the Building Regulations. JCT 2005 What’s New?

An essential guide, providing an in-depth comparative analysis of the key JCT 2005 contracts with their ’98 versions. This 5th edition by Allan Ashworth has been fully updated to take into account recent legislation, and provides a sound basis for practitioners and students alike. It gives them an understanding of the principles involved in contractual and procurement arrangements in the construction industry.
