Revised Control of Noise at Work regulations

Keywords: Noise control, Employees, Legislation

New legislation is targeting the construction industry to cut noise at work to protect employees from hearing loss. The revised Control of Noise at Work regulation requires that exposure to noise must be reduced by more than 50 per cent. “Coming into force in April, the amended regulation will have a big impact on the construction industry”, Simon Mantle, NHBC’s Health and Safety Manager, said. “Employers in the industry will have to review their sites and look at options to ensure they control and manage the risks according to the government’s regulations.” NHBC says there are a number of controls that can be used to eliminate or reduce the risk to those on a construction site. These could include manufacturing components off site, the purchase or hire of quieter equipment, cutting the amount of time operatives are exposed to noise and the provision of hearing protection for employees.
