Alan W. ScottUniversity of Northumbria, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK

is the recipient of the Journal’s Outstanding Paper Award for Excellence for his paper

“Traditional roofing techniques in the Lake District National Park”

which appeared in Structural Survey, Vol. 21 No. 5, 2003

Alan Scott is a Senior Lecturer in the School of the Built Environment at the University of Northumbria. He graduated from Liverpool Polytechnic (at present John Moores University) in Building Surveying in 1977, becoming Chartered in 1980. He has worked in London, Liverpool and the North-East in both public and private sectors. Following completion of the RICS Diploma in Building Conservation in 1993 he moved to Northumbria University and has specialized in the study of vernacular buildings and especially roofing techniques. At present he is researching into thatching in Scotland and hopes to extend this to a PhD in future. He is married with two daughters and lives in the historic market town of Richmond in North Yorkshire.
