The National House Building Council has reported that UK new home starts in the fourth quarter of 2003 were 2 per cent higher than the same period 12 months before, but completions were 7 per cent higher. There were strong regional variations with the north being much more buoyant than the south, reflecting the much faster house-price inflation in the north. The figures for Merseyside showed a staggering 56 per cent increase in starts!
