End of “right-to-buy discounts?”

End of “right-to-buy discounts?”

Keywords: Council tenants, Right-to-buy, Discounts

Council tenants' right to buy discounts should be phased out, a task force set up by deputy prime minister has recommended. The home ownership task force, in its report published in November, has recommended that instead of obtaining discounts on their properties, council tenants should instead be given a so-called “equity loan”. It also called on the government to suspend the right to buy in high house price areas like London and the south-east. It has also recommended that councils should be given first opportunity to buy their former properties when they come in the market and that any receipts from house sales should be recycled to fund local low cost home ownership schemes.
