  • The HSE has published statistics of fatal injuries for 2002/2003. The figures show that the number of fatally injured workers fell by 10 per cent last year. There were 226 works deaths – 71 of these were in construction.

  • At the same time the HSC have expressed concern that local authority health and safety inspection rates fell by 10 per cent last year.

  • The HSE has published a discussion document seeking opinions on the regulation of first aid at work.

  • The HSE has published guidance (in the form of a chart and a Web site: www.hse.gov.uk/msd/mac) on ways to protect workers’ backs.

  • The Asbestos (Prohibition) Regulations 1992 have been amended. The importation of products containing asbestos is brought into line with the existing prohibition on supply and use of asbestos containing materials.
