Stamp duty changes

The European Commission has approved the UK's plans to exempt non-residential property transactions in disadvantaged areas from stamp duty. The exemption is expected to take effect from the beginning of the next financial year and last until the end of 2006. Meanwhile the Government has also published a consultation paper "Modernising stamp duty" and has proposed increases in liability of at least 600 per cent. The proposals have been widely criticised.
