  • HSC report that 249 people were killed in work-related accidents around the UK in 2001/2002 (43 fewer than 2000/2001). Of the fatalities 79 were in construction. There were 27,477 major injuries, which was 47 fewer than the previous year. The Commission estimates that 40.2 million working days were lost due to work-related illness and injury in 2001/2002.

  • Safety regulations were extended to all mobile work equipment including forklift trucks, dumper trucks and tractors from 5 December 2002.

  • Average H&S fines were up by a third in 2001/2002. Of the 1,064 cases prosecuted by the HSE last year, more than 84 per cent resulted in conviction, with an average fine of £12,194.
