The Health and Safety Executive have launched a Small Firms Assistance Scheme in the pilot areas of West Yorkshire, Essex and Devon and Cornwall. Eligible small firms will have access to up to 50 per cent of the cost of undertaking health and safety training and/or access mentoring. Grants up to £1,000 are available to firms having fewer than ten employees and also meeting certain financial criteria. The HSC have announced that work-related fatalities in the UK are down 15 per cent in the last year. Of the 249 fatalities, 79 occurred in the construction industry. The HSE has launched a campaign to promote awareness of the duty to manage the risk from asbestos in premises, which comes into force in Spring 2004.
