"Towards standardising the assessment of flood damaged properties in the UK"

which appeared in Structural Survey, Vol. 19 No. 4, 2001

John Nicholas BSc (Hons) PhD commenced his construction industry career by qualifying as a Heating Engineer. From this he took up post in a design and estimating office where he was responsible for project design, costing and management of building services installations up to individual vales of »3m. He then went on to study full time, achieving a first class degree in construction management at UMIST in 1997. From this he achieved a PhD, with his specialist subject being the evaluation of risk by suppliers when furnishing contractors with credit. John is presently a lecturer at Wolverhampton University, and his main research interests are: assessing flood damage; financial risk analysis; and strategy building. He has published in excess of 20 papers in leading construction journals, disseminating the findings of his research work.

Gary D. Holt BSc (Hons) PhD, FCIOB, FRSA, FFB began his construction career in the UK speculative development sector. This was followed by a decade of teaching and researching in higher education, most recently as Professor of Construction Management and Director of the Built Environment Research Unit, at the University of Wolverhampton, UK. He has undertaken numerous research projects with funding from various sources, including charities, public agencies and industrial sponsors. Dissemination of his research findings includes over 100 published refereed academic journal papers and frequent international conference presentations. He has also published four textbooks on different construction management (CM) themes and presently has another two CM books nearing completion. He has reviewed papers for most of the leading CM journals, been invited on to several international Scientific and Technical Committees and has refereed for the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council of the UK. Presently, Dr Holt is a CM consultant and part-time tutor with the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, at Bath University, UK.

Dr David Proverbs BSc (Hons), MCIOB, PG. Cert.Ed. Is presently academic section leader of Surveying and Property Management at the University of Wolverhampton, UK. He has undertaken several research projects, both for industry and the government. Research funding has been secured from the research councils and various industrial sponsors. Areas of research specialism include: international benchmarking; construction productivity; contractor performance; flood damage assessment; and construction project coalition satisfaction. The products of his extensive research activities have been disseminated through: a host of referred academic journal papers; numerous international conferences; research seminars and workshops; articles and features in the construction press; and the publication of numerous reports and working papers. He acts as a reviewer for many refereed journals, the EPSRC, the European Union's Fifth Framework Programme and is on the technical committee for several international conferences. He has been consulted by Lloyds TSB Insurance, the Construction Productivity Network and Rameses Associates. Current industry sponsored research endorsed by the RIOCS, CIOB Institute of Loss Adjusters and Association of Building Engineers is seeking to standardise the assessment of flood damaged domestic properties.
