  • A report into health and safety education on UK undergraduate courses is critical of the provision."Identification and management of risk in undergraduate construction courses" is priced at £15 but can also be downloaded "free" from: www.hse.gov.uk/research/content/crr/index.htm

  • A revised code of practice on the CDM Regulations has been published and came into force 1 February 2002. There is a greater emphasis on the management of health and safety throughout the life of the project; clarification of the responsibilities of clients and designers; and a restructuring of the document to make it more user-friendly.The code "Managing Health and Safety in Construction" is available from HSE Books (Tel: 01787 881165), price £9.50.

  • Two guidance documents, offering general advice on construction safety with one aimed at small firms, have been issued."Health and Safety in Construction" (HSG 150) has been updated but "Absolutely Essential Health and Safety Toolkit for the smaller construction contractor" (INDG 344) is a new document. Both are available from the contact details given above.

  • The HSE has also published guidance on stress prevention in small firms, the H&S statistics for 2000/01, proposals to amend personal protective equipment, manual handling, workplace and work equipment regulations, and a consultation document on new regulations for controlling hazardous substances and lead at work.
