News from the EC includes:

  • The Commission is delaying reopening talks with banking and consumer groups over an EU-wide code of conduct for mortgage lenders after a British report concluded that self-regulation had not been effective in the UK.

  • A forum of European construction professionals had its second meeting on 20 October last year. The forum aims to promote mutual recognition of construction professional qualifications throughout the EU.

  • The Commission has prepared a summary of work completed to improve the competitiveness of the construction industry. Working groups are looking at abnormally low tenders, benchmarking and IT, and studies of quality and innovation.

  • A new quality mark has been introduced by the European Group of Valuers' Association (TEGoVA). The mark can be awarded by TEGoVA to national certification bodies across Europe which fulfil its criteria for the education, training and development of valuers.

  • The Isle of Man is the only area of the UK which can introduce reduced rates of VAT on renovation and repair of private dwellings under a new experimental measure.
