Conserving water

Keywords Conservation property, Efficiency

A research project by BRE, funded by Essex and Suffolk Water, is monitoring 12 housing association properties fitted with water efficient appliances and three fitted with a greywater system. The remaining 22 houses on the site at Maldon, Essex, will be used as a control to compare the savings made. Water use will be assessed over a 14-month period and a specification for water-efficient housing developed. Water-efficient appliances include six-litre flush wcs, spray taps and low water volume showers. Greywater is water taken from baths, showers and handbasins, treated and then re-used, e.g. to flush wcs.
