3D X-ray inspection of automotive components: 100 per cent inspection and verification

Article Type: Mini features From: Sensor Review, Volume 28, Issue 4

No matter whether it is a spark plug, casting, aluminium cylinder head, catalytic converter or other component, 100 per cent inspection and verification has become the norm in the automotive and manufacturing industry.

3D X-ray has introduced a range of X-ray inspection systems that help to overcome the problems and prohibitive expense of product recalls and liability issues. The systems provide in-line, batch and robot production lines with fully integrated QC/SPC/SCADA systems that have the in-built ability to make automated pass/fail decisions. And, by using line-scan technology, they cost around half the price of competitive equipment.

The systems provide precise real-time checks on internal layout and intermeshing components as well as providing accurate measurements of length, area and angle. They are sensitive enough to detect precise levels of fill of powders and liquids, yet powerful enough to image through 20 cm of solid steel.

3D X-ray’s range works at production line speeds up to 80 m per minute and accuracies approaching the width of a human hair. They can do this even in difficult situations such as when components are housed inside products made from similar or denser materials, e.g. plastic cogs inside a plastic or metal casing.

The systems are available with a wide range of dedicated software modules including 2D and 3D imaging, tomography, image analysis, fault detection, 3D measurement and QC.
