Keywords: Patents, Sensors, Environment

This invention relates to a system for the measurement of environmental effects using fibre optic grating sensors. It includes multi-axis fibre grating sensors that may be used to sense axial strain and temperature, or axial and transverse strain simultaneously to detect chemical changes such as moisture by using appropriate transducers or changes to the structural integrity of coatings such as adhesive bonds. A method of multiplexing these sensors is described, enabling high sensitivity and high-speed measurements to be made. This is accomplished by using spectral filters placed to correspond to each sensor. By forming networks of spectral elements and using wavelength division multiplexing, arrays of fibre grating sensors may be processed in a single fibre line.
