Latest additions to Sony's IEEE 1394 digital camera family offer new features, which make them ideal for demanding industrial applications.

Sony Business Europe's Image Sensing Solutions division, one of the pioneers in IEEE 1394 technology, has announced two new, monochrome digital cameras designed for high speed, high resolution machine vision applications. They deliver double the frame rates of earlier versions, provide an external trigger for capturing clear image of fast moving objects and a slow shutter for still images in low light environments (Plate 12). The XCD- SX910 offers SXGA format output and the faster XCD-X710 is an XGA version. Both C-mount cameras can be easily synchronised into a multi-camera system. The cameras also feature fast, plug-and-play IEEE 1394 digital interfaces that provide connectivity at up to 400 Mbps.

The XCD-SX910 uses a 1/2 in. interline transfer (IT) progressive scan 1,450,000 pixel CCD. It has selectable frame rates up to 15 fps. The XCD-X710 uses a 1/3 in. IT progressive scan 800,000 pixel CCD and offers frame rates up to 30 fps. For both cameras, the 10-bit output delivers up to 1,024 levels of grey, associated with high quality images. A variety of convenient features such as partial scan (16 x 16 zones) and selectable output modes (frame rate/bit depth) make these cameras extremely flexible.

The high frame rates and excellent resolution of these cameras also enable effective inspection of high-speed production lines, leading to higher throughput and productivity.

These new Sony digital cameras can be found in any quality-critical imaging applications such as demanding factory automation, semiconductor inspection, bio-medical analysis and image processing systems, from 3D positioning, surface analysis to defect sorting.

The XCD-SX910 and XCD-X710 operate from an 8-30V DC supply with a power consumption of 3W. The cameras are housed in compact, rugged steel cases measuring 44(W) x 33(H) x 116(D) mm and each weighs 250 g.

The cameras will be available from November 2003. A tripod adaptor and two lenses, 25 mm HD and 50 mm MACRO, are available as optional accessories.
