Keywords: Force sensors

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS-118), specify maximum forces that can be developed by automatic window, door, and sunroof closing mechanisms under defined spring rates and displacements. Sensor Developments' model 10293-450 Pinch Force Sensor, uses interchangeable spring packs and adjustable initial “gaps” to allow the checking of these power operated systems.

In operation, the sensor is “clipped” onto the window and the closer actuated. A companion instrument records the peak force developed to verify compliance to the specification. Standard capacities for the sensor are forces up to 200N spring rates from 2 to 65 N/mm, and displacements from 6 to 200 mm (see Plate 6). The sensor may also be mated to more sophisticated instrumentation for development applications.
