An inexpensive, physically small sensor array, containing a few sensors compared to the earlier solutions is presented. The sensor array comprises two or more parallel lines of equally spaced sensors, preferably shifted in the longitudinal direction of the sensor array with a distance less than that between the measuring points. This provides the possibility of measuring structures in the fingerprint that are smaller than the spacing of the sensors. The sensors may measure capacitance or resistivity. The fingerprint to be measured is moved past the sensor array, ensuring that there is no latent fingerprint remaining from the earlier user.
