Seki Technotron Corp. of Japan has obtained the exclusive rights to sell Taiwan Advanced Sensors Corporation's image sensors in Japan. Seki, a Tokyo-based trading firm, has begun to sell the Taiwan Republic's company's metal-oxide semiconductors that reportedly consume one-eighth to one-seventh the power that sensors based on charge-coupled devices employ.

Seki officials explain that the new sensor chips will be used in cellular phones and personal computer cameras. The 1 cm × 15 cm sensor has two main functions, they say, one for image detection and the other for image-data processing.

Taiwan Advanced Sensors has succeeded in improving the quality of the images captured by its sensor chip through the use of noise-removing technology. Officials point out that the chips are "already in widespread use" for digital cameras as are being marketed successfully in both the US and in leading Western European countries.

Officials observe that at a cost of about $2.90-2.95 apiece, the firm is aiming at annual sales of around $7.8 million within 2-3 years in fiscal 2003/04 or 2005/06.
