Applicant: Sound Tech Systems LLC, USAPatent number: US6388949Publication date: 14 May 2002Title: Marine turtle acoustic repellent/alerting apparatus and method

Keywords: Acoustics, Sonar

This invention relates to an apparatus and method that is capable of warning turtles of possible danger, such as a moving vessel or a power plant water intake. It employs at least three classes of acoustic stimulation for marine turtles based on original behavioral and electrophysiological study of marine turtles. This includes a first acoustic signal of less than 200 Hz, a second acoustic signal of between 200 Hz and 900 Hz, and a third acoustic signal of between 900Hz and 15 kHz. Acoustic projection and amplitude modulation is achieved on either low frequency (kHz), or high frequency (MHz) ultrasonic carriers. Additional forms of multisensory stimulation can be provided, including vibrational tactile and visual alerting, along with a sonar system to steer the system in a direction in which turtles may be located.
