A new publication entitled "Image Processing Today" has been published as part of the IT outreach programme. It may also be downloaded as a PDF file from http://www.st-outreach.org.uk/themes/mv-intro.htm. The booklet, featuring a foreword from Richard White, Chairman of the UK Industrial Vision Association (UKIVA), highlights the UK's extensive academic and commercial capability in the field of image processing research, development and application.

It features case studies from fields as diverse as industrial, medical, multimedia and security. The contents will be of interest to anyone who is active in the image processing arena, whether a researcher, product developer or user. Further case studies which, for space reasons, could not be included in the booklet can also be found at the IT outreach Web site.

IT outreach is a joint initiative of the Department of Trade and Industry and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The programme's aim is to foster commercial exploitation of academic research in five Information Technology sectors, one of which is machine vision.

The UKIVA has also contributed to three workshops in the IT outreach programme and is committed to encourage co-operation between academic researchers in machine vision and its members in order to expedite technology transfer.
