Close co-operation for automated microscopy advances from Olympus and Soft Imaging System

Keywords: Microscopy, Machine vision

Olympus and Soft Imaging System have inaugurated an increased level of co-operation and inter-company communication.

The aim is to facilitate joint development of hardware and software in rapid response to new market trends. By concentrating on their independent core skills but working together through the development process, the two companies can deliver early and innovative solutions for the light microscopy market.

Olympus Microscopes division has been working in co-operation with Soft Imaging System, bringing together their microscopy and image-analysis expertise, for several years across Europe. One current example is the integration of the Olympus IX81 and BX61 motorised microscopes into the image-analytical solutions offered by Soft Imaging System.

The entire range of microscope functions is software controlled with user-definable access – including shutters for reflected and transmitted light microscopy, prisms for controlling the light path between the binocular eyepiece and cameras as well as parlocality correction.

All microscope imaging modes are supported (brightfield, darkfield, phase contrast, interference contrast, etc.). The interface will set illumination conditions automatically, control the optical components according to the selected observation mode, or adapt all settings to any change in magnification. All filter wheels can be software operated, the light path set for specific microscopy procedures, objective magnification changed or optical elements swung into position.

The AutoFocus software is an integral part of analysis modules. AutoFocus is helpful with routine microscope work and also eases integration into automated applications using motorised Olympus microscopes and Soft Imaging System's own cameras. This procedure is suitable for brightfield, darkfield and fluorescence microscopy.
