OGP introduces compact, multi-sensor metrology system with Telestar™ optics

Keyword: Metrology

The SmartScope® Quest 250 from Optical Gaging Products, Inc. (OGP®) is an innovative, benchtop, multi-sensor dimensional measurement system with unique TeleStar optics that improve measurement accuracy (see Plate 2).

SmartScope Quest 250 is a true multi-sensor measurement system that offers high accuracy video measurements with the versatility and convenience of a continuously adjustable zoom lens. Image quality from the patented TeleStar® zoom optics is on the level previously possible only with fixed lens systems. According to Eric Gesner, OGP corporate product manager, "Our patented TeleStar zoom lens was designed and built specifically for precision video metrology. It provides a phenomenally clear high contrast image with virtually zero distortion. The lens is telecentric and has collimated profile (episcopic) illumination that matches the aperture of the optics over its entire 10 range. It excels at measurement of parts that are troublesome to other optical systems."

As a multi-sensor system, SmartScope Quest seamlessly integrates data from video, touch probe, and laser sensors to completely characterize a part. The touch probe is used to acquire data from areas not accessible by the optics, and supports a wide variety of standard probe heads and styli. Interchangeable laser sensors add another measurement capability to SmartScope Quest. "While the video and touch probe are ideal for dimensional measurements on a macro scale, the laser allows for surface profiling and scanning at a micro level," says Gesner. All sensors are calibrated to a common reference frame, and can be used interchangeably within the same measurement program. "The combination of the three sensor technologies with our industry standard MeasureMind® 3D MultiSensor metrology software creates a highly versatile system that significantly improves measurement accuracy and productivity." Parts that previously needed to be measured in separate set-ups on different machines can now be measured completely on SmartScope Quest.

Software options for SmartScope Quest dovetail smoothly into the company's new MeasureMind 3D MultiSensor metrology software, offering CAD import, contour analysis and fitting, and customized report generation and data export. Applications for SmartScope Quest exist in virtually any industry that manufactures parts needing accurate dimensional inspection and measurement for improved quality and productivity.

SmartScope Quest can be seen in action in OGP's booth #7937 at National Manufacturing Week in the Design Engineering Show.
