A Sonic Gas Flow Transducer

Applicant: J. Baumoel and R. Schaefer, USAPatent number: WO0072000Publication date: 30 November 2000Title: Transducer for Sonic Measurement of Gas Flow and Related Characteristics

This invention relates to sonic flow measurement devices for measuring gas flow characteristics. The invention provides an acoustically matched interface between the gas flow to be measured and the measuring apparatus.

A transducer for sonic measurements of gas flow is described which includes a tubular housing with a membrane rigidly attached to one end of the housing. An actuator located in the housing and interacts with the membrane via an acoustically conductive material. The actuator comprises a stack of piezoelectric slices while the acoustic impedance matching material has an acoustic impedance between that of the actuator and that of the gas flow. Another embodiment of the transducer includes a reflector for altering a direction of the acoustic energy directed to or from the transducer.
