High-speed contrast sensor provides reliable mark detection

High-speed contrast sensor provides reliable mark detection

Keywords: Optics, Sensors

Omron has solved the problem of detecting target marks that contrast with their background with the development of the E3MV contrast sensor (Plate 11). Providing the mark is discernable against the background the E3MV will be able to detect it reliably, and moreover at high speed, suiting the device to use on packaging lines and in labelling applications, as well as a host of other production machine and process applications.

Key to the sensor's reliable operation is an integrated threshold adjustment facility. This allows the user to precisely set the pass/fail limits of the target. Not only does this offer a more sophisticated and reliable response than a simple presence output, the signal can also provide production managers with a longer term monitor of the quality of the target, which can help to identify production problems.

An important feature of the E3MV is its ability to provide reliable operation at high speeds. A 30ms switching time enables the device to detect contrasting marks in high- speed positioning applications, allowing production speeds to be maintained or ramped up without the risk of compromising the quality of finished products.

Setting up of the sensor to recognise the target, and adjusting the threshold can be performed either locally on the device itself, or remotely via an HMI or similar user interface. Local setting has been designed to be quick and straightforward, requiring only a single button to be pressed as the target is presented to the device. The remote setting capability enables the device to be readily integrated into complex machines in such a way that it is simple for the user to set-up, even when it is difficult to access. It is also possible for the machine to perform an automatic sensor set-up procedure as part of its own set-up routine.

To facilitate easy integration, the E3M is fitted as standard with an M12 industrial connector, and this can be rotated through 90 degrees for maximum installation flexibility. A pre-wired version is also available.

The E3MV is available in either light on or dark on light PNP output versions, and offers a sensing range of up to 900mm. Typical applications include labelling, positioning, high speed mark detection, piece part orientation, colour mark detection, and print quality registration.
