Meterdrive, a linear measurement system for industrial environments

Meterdrive, a linear measurement system for industrial environmentsKeywords: Linear, Encoder, Measurement

The Meterdrive linear coder developed by Vectral is a robust and simple digital measurement system, specially designed for difficult industrial environments (Plate 9). A world first, it can be used to measure distances and to perform high-speed positioning, even over long distances (up to 250m). It is based on an original principle: an opto-electronic detection head slides along a perforated tape and counts the number of perforations, up to a resolution of 0.1mm and at a speed of up to 10m/s.

The stainless steel tape is flexible and easy to set in place. It is simply stretched between two points and the reading head is screwed onto the moving support using four screws. No ruler support is needed and the absence of mechanical parts eliminates the risk of wear. The Meterdrive is available in a standard linear coder format or in the form of an electronic measuring tape.

This version, christened Rollzam, comprises a flexible tape wound inside a case which is fitted with a spring for automatic tape rewinding. The electrical connections and reading head are fixed and protected against the environment. With this model, no cable support chain is required. It has a measurement range of up to 10m.

Meterdrive is specially designed for industrial environments liable to damage the tape: cutting of profiles, panels, tubes; automatic positioning; storage; elevator height measurement; modernisation of planers, bending machines, cutters; telescopic systems; jack travel; tank level measurements; electroplating and installations.
